Round Watercolor Paper

In time for Earth Day, we invite you to explore Hahnemühle’s round paper with a range of designs, such as fruit cross-sections, planets, and other circular objects!

By The Art Toolkit Team

When choosing a paper to sketch or paint on, we first consider the weight or thickness. Artist and Art Toolkit founder Maria Coryell-Martin prefers at least 90lb if using water media, similar to most card stock.

Next, consider the surface of the paper. If you intend to use ink, a smooth surface means your pen can glide across it. This is a more traditional “hot press” watercolor paper. If you plan a more dedicated watercolor painting, a “cold-press” surface brings texture and dynamic irregularity to a painting. When people refer to a paper’s tooth, they’re describing a paper’s surface feel: more tooth is rougher, less tooth is smoother.

Last winter, we started carrying an adorable Watercolor Bookmark Pad by Hahnemühle, and it was such a hit that we were inspired to add another paper shape to our selection! Hahnemühle Round Watercolor Paper is cold-pressed, and 100% cotton with a soft paper feel, perfect for watercolor and gouache paints. Each tin contains 30 loose watercolor sheets (300gsm, 13cm diameter) in a natural white color. Hahnemühle Round Watercolor Paper is vegan, acid-free, and age-resistant.

While these tins can fit in the main pocket of an A5 Art Toolkit, we recommend slipping a couple of loose sheets into your daily sketchbook to keep them flat and protected without carrying more weight or bulk than necessary! The protective tin also keeps moisture out, so you can always slip it in a bag or backpack alongside your Toolkit if you want to bring it out and about!

Learn About Papermaking

A couple of years ago, we hosted a fantastic demo with Joe Domeier from Hahnemühle USA, “Paper Makes a Difference,” during which he shared the history of papermaking.

In this demo, Joe talks through why quality paper matters and covers the following characteristics: sizing, weight, deckles, and the features, benefits, and differences between many types of paper fibers, including sustainable fibers made from agave. Joe also shares the environmental impact of making paper, the process of making fine art paper, and the history of paper-making using a 438-year-old mill.
